Advanced Bidirectional Converter for Renewables and Data Centers: Pioneering Spanish Technology

In the heart of Spain, the Galician company Norvento has made a significant stride in the energy transition with the launch of their innovative nXL converter. The unveiling took place in Lugo, marking a new era in renewable energy technology.

The nXL converter, developed under Norvento's TECHnPower brand, boasts a power density of 622 kVA/m3, making it the most powerful and compact of its kind worldwide. This remarkable device can offer up to 9 MVA in a standard 20-foot container, a testament to Norvento's commitment to meeting the most challenging demands in the energy sector.

The European Commission has recognised the relevance of Norvento's work, awarding the neFO project, which includes the production of the nXL converter, a subsidy of €27.5 million. The neFO factory, with an initial production capacity of 5 GW and plans to double that figure in three years, reflects a shift in model: from Lugo to the world, with proprietary technology and a global vision.

The nXL converter's cooling system is a marvel of engineering, designed by Norvento to be sealed and efficient. It combines liquid cooling of main components with internal recirculation of cold air, ensuring stable operation even in extreme climates.

One of the key features of the nXL converter is its direct integration with batteries, providing a solution for demand peaks or possible interruptions. This makes it a vital component for accelerating the integration of renewables, storage, and new industries like green hydrogen.

Norvento has identified data centers as a priority market for the nXL converter. The converters from the nXL range are bidirectional and capable of operating in on-grid and off-grid modes, with a low harmonic content (THDi <1%) and a DC/AC ratio of up to 200% without modifications.

Moreover, the nXL converter has IP65 certification throughout the system, allowing deployment in any scenario. This robust design symbolises Spain's commitment to being at the forefront of critical technologies for decarbonization.

With the neFO project, Norvento is not only manufacturing converters but also driving a sustainable industrial ecosystem. This initiative is expected to generate employment and solidify Galicia as a technological hub in Europe's energy transition. The self-sufficient and emission-neutral neFO factory is set to begin operating on January 1, 2027.

The nXL converter is a beacon of hope in the fight against climate change, demonstrating that Spain is leading the way in the development of innovative solutions for a sustainable future. The nXL converter, along with the neFO project, represents a significant step forward in the global energy transition.
