Affordable Smartphone CMF's Nothing Phone 2 Pro: Potential Frontrunner among Budget-Friendly Devices for 2023
The tech world is buzzing with excitement as Carl Pei's Nothing has unveiled its latest creation, the Phone 2 Pro. This sleek device is a testament to innovative design and impressive upgrades, setting it apart from its predecessor, the Phone 1.
The Phone 2 Pro boasts a refreshingly lightweight build, weighing just 185g and measuring 7.8mm thick, making it a delight to hold and carry. Its screen, a 6.77-inch AMOLED display, is more than bright enough to ensure a crisp and vibrant viewing experience.
In terms of photography, the Phone 2 Pro has made significant strides. Its rear cameras have been upgraded to a triple-lens system consisting of a 50-megapixel f/1.88 main lens, a 50-megapixel f/1.85 telephoto lens, and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens. These improvements promise to capture stunning, high-quality images.
Under the hood, the Phone 2 Pro is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Pro 5G chip, which is 10% more powerful than its predecessor. This upgrade ensures smoother performance and faster processing speeds.
One standout feature of the Phone 2 Pro is the physical Essential button, located below the right-side power button. This button grants access to an AI memory, offering a unique and convenient way to interact with the device.
Nothing has emphasised modular accessories for the Phone 2 Pro. The device features a "Universal Cover" system that allows magnetic attachment of add-ons, such as clip-on lenses and wallet/stand attachments, without removing the entire back case. This system builds on the legacy of the Phone 1's modular accessory approach, suggesting some continuity and compatibility in accessory functionality.
The Phone 2 Pro also retains the lanyard loop/“thumbscrew” accessory point from the Phone 1, enabling the use of lanyards and mounts designed for the previous model. Furthermore, several third-party cases and covers for the Phone 2 Pro have MagSafe-compatible magnetic rings, potentially overlapping with the Phone 1's magnetic accessory ecosystem if they also support MagSafe-like features.
However, direct compatibility of physical cases or back covers between the two models is unlikely due to differences in phone dimensions and design. For example, Phone 2 Pro-specific cases and back covers are available and styled specifically for that model.
The Phone 2 Pro will be available for pre-orders starting on April 28, with official sales beginning on May 6. It will be sold directly from Nothing and select retailers. The device comes in four vibrant colours: light green, white, black, and the author's favourite, orange, which features a two-tone design that looks stunning.
Pricing for the Phone 2 Pro varies by region. In the UK, it retails for £219, €249 in Europe, and ₹18,999 in India. Unfortunately, no official information on the availability or pricing of the Phone 2 Pro accessories in the U.S. or India has been provided.
In a notable development, the AI feature in the Phone 2 Pro, accessible through the Essential key, will reportedly be turned into a subscription service in the near future.
