New AI Tool PromptZero Aims to Reduce Carbon Emissions from AI Models

A new tool called PromptZero, developed by the Earth Public Information Collaborative (EPIC), is set to revolutionize the way we interact with AI models like ChatGPT-4. The tool, launched in July 2025, aims to reduce carbon emissions from AI by encouraging shorter, clearer, and more concise responses.

ChatGPT-4 queries are known to consume up to 10 times more electricity than a typical Google search, mainly due to generating long and detailed outputs. PromptZero addresses this issue by activating a "low-emission mode" through a simple copy-paste prompt. This instructs the AI model to minimize unnecessary words, filler phrases, long introductions, and repeated content, thereby reducing computational load and energy usage.

By making AI responses more concise without sacrificing clarity, PromptZero can reduce the energy consumption per query and thus the carbon footprint associated with AI interactions. It also estimates and displays the amount of CO₂ avoided after each response, reinforcing environmental awareness for users.

The tool was introduced at the AI for Good Summit in Geneva and aligns with sustainability strategies like the UAE’s Vision 2050 and "We the UAE 2031" initiative. While exact quantitative metrics of emission reductions per use have not been detailed publicly, the rationale is that every word saved corresponds to less computational effort and thus less CO₂ emitted.

EPIC encourages broad adoption by governments, developers, and data center operators to incorporate such sustainability prompts into AI default configurations to maximize impact.

In addition to its environmental benefits, PromptZero can also improve the efficiency of AI interactions. For instance, generating a 100-word AI email consumes approximately 0.14 kilowatt-hours of electricity, comparable to powering 14 LED bulbs for one hour.

Leonard Lee, director of IPUR, stated that AI, with its ability to detect patterns, model complexity, and support rapid decision-making, offers new and powerful tools to help meet various challenges. By making AI more energy efficient, tools like PromptZero can help us harness these benefits while minimizing the environmental costs.
