AI-Enhanced Rotoscoping and Masking Revealed by Mocha Pro
Boris FX has recently unveiled the latest version of its popular post-production and visual effects (VFX) tool, Mocha Pro 2025.5. This update introduces a host of significant improvements, particularly focusing on AI-powered masking, tracking, and workflow efficiency.
Key new features include an AI Face Detection system, which automatically detects and tracks human faces in a shot using machine learning. This system generates elliptical masks for easy applications like blurring or mosaic effects to hide identity. These masks can be manually refined or feature individual facial feature holdouts for beauty work.
The Matte Assist ML tool has also been updated, allowing users to convert any reference spline into a Matte Assist matte and create reference splines from any matte frame. It also supports editing problematic frames for more precise mattes. This tool greatly accelerates creating animated mattes for selective blurring, colour correction, junk mattes, and stylising shots.
The Object Brush Tool, integrated within the Essentials workspace, enables intuitive, point-and-click or area brushing to generate precise object mattes. This speeds up rotoscoping tasks and works seamlessly with Matte Assist ML mattes. It supports inverting mattes to apply effects selectively in front of or behind subjects.
Improvements have also been made to the camera and tracking tools. Updates include solving for locked-off shots, snapping imported 3D models to moving objects, and expanded 3D camera solve functionality to enhance tracking accuracy.
Users can now create custom export presets and batch export data directly from Mocha Pro. A new "Back and Forth" rendering button allows rendering or tracking both forwards and backwards in one click, saving time.
Mocha Pro 2025.5 also features improved support for Fusion, SynthEyes, and ACES 2.0 color workflows. It complies with VFX Reference Platform 2023 for seamless integration into modern pipelines.
The new version offers assets such as the toolkit and various videos that can be downloaded from the Boris FX website. Artists can request a 14-day free Mocha Pro trial via the Boris FX Hub application. Mocha Pro customers on active subscriptions or upgrade & support plans receive the 2025 product release as a complimentary update.
