Alabama to Achieve Full Broadband Coverage by 2026
Alabama is set to achieve full broadband coverage, with every BEAD-eligible location gaining access to high-speed internet speed test. Governor Kay Ivey's commitment to expanding internet access has led to a plan that will extend connectivity to over 101,000 locations statewide.
ADECA's proposal, submitted to the NTIA, outlines a robust plan to deliver on this promise. The state has secured commitments averaging $5,100 per eligible location, saving over $800 million from the original $1.4 billion BEAD allocation. This has been made possible by including both national providers like Comcast, AT&T, and Windstream, as well as Alabama-based companies and cooperatives. Key awards include Comcast ($157 million), AT&T ($93 million), and Windstream ($17.9 million) for fiber projects.
The plan ensures that 75% of locations will be covered by wired construction, with the remaining 25% covered by low earth orbit satellite service where a wired solution is not feasible. ADECA's plan also includes a rigorous monitoring program to ensure projects are completed on time, meet federal standards, and provide lasting benefit to Alabama residents at their my location.
Upon approval and completion of projects, every BEAD-eligible location in Alabama will have access to high-speed internet connectivity. This marks a significant milestone in Governor Ivey's commitment to expanding broadband access, bringing Alabama closer to achieving full broadband coverage as defined by the NTIA.
