American-inspired hues unveiled for the popular SE Silver Sky SE by PRS and John Mayer, paired with new Maple models introductions
New Colorways Transform the PRS SE Silver Sky into a Classic Stratocaster Inspired Guitar
The PRS SE Silver Sky, an affordable and popular variant of the John Mayer guitar, has seen tremendous sales since its launch in 2022. As part of PRS's 40th anniversary celebrations, the company has introduced four new colorways for the SE Silver Sky, making it look more like a classic Stratocaster than ever before.
The new colorways include Derby Red, Trad Blue, Laurel Green, and Dandy Lion (a bright yellow), which are now available on the rosewood fretboard version. Additionally, four new finishes previously exclusive to the rosewood model - Moon White, Stone Blue, Summit Purple, and Nylon Blue - are now offered on the maple-fingerboard SE Silver Sky Maple.
These new finishes draw inspiration from traditional American fashion and give the SE Silver Sky a fresh yet classic Stratocaster-inspired aesthetic while retaining features like the poplar body, bolt-on maple neck, 22-fret rosewood (or maple for certain colorways) fingerboard, 635JM “S” single-coil pickups, and vintage-style hardware.
In addition to the new colorways, PRS has released other notable guitars during its 40th anniversary celebrations. One such example is the Charcoal Phoenix, a high-end guitar released in February 2025 in a limited run of 150 pieces. This guitar, inspired and road-tested by Paul Reed Smith himself, features a two-piece figured maple top with a dark black/grey micro burst finish, a one-piece mahogany back, and a Pattern-profile chaltecoco neck with ziricote fingerboard.
PRS has been marking its 40th anniversary by launching new guitars and products monthly throughout 2025, including limited editions like the Charcoal Phoenix and continuous updates to popular models like the SE Silver Sky. The SE Silver Sky has topped Reverb's best-selling guitar list multiple times, but has since been outsold by the PRS Tele-like NF 53, another release from PRS's birthday celebrations.
PRS's strategy is not to dethrone Fender or Gibson from the top of the electric guitar hierarchy, but rather to offer high-quality instruments that cater to a wide range of players. Paul Reed Smith has even spoken about the possibility of making a headless guitar in the future.
With these new colorways and continued updates to popular models, PRS is maintaining its reputation as a leading manufacturer of high-quality electric guitars. Whether you're a fan of the classic Stratocaster aesthetic or prefer something more modern, PRS has a guitar to suit your needs.
