Apple Shifts Focus to AI-Powered Smart Glasses to Rival Meta
Apple has shifted its focus in the smart glasses market. After pausing work on a budget Vision Pro headset, the tech giant is now concentrating on AI-powered glasses to rival Meta's offerings. The first version, due in 2027, will not have a display but will boast cameras, AI, and microphones.
Apple's new direction aims to compete with Meta's AI Ray-Ban glasses. Unlike the initial Vision Pro plan, the new smart glasses will not have an integrated display in the first version. Instead, they will rely on an Apple chip and iPhone connection for functionality. These glasses will feature built-in cameras, microphones, and AI for various purposes, including health tracking.
Apple is also considering the fashion-conscious user. Future models are planned to have displays and will be offered in a range of materials and frames to cater to different tastes. Meta, meanwhile, is developing its own AI-enabled smart glasses, such as the Meta Ray-Ban Display and Oakley Meta HSTN models, with advanced AI capabilities like real-time translation and intelligent notification filtering.
Apple's new smart glasses, set for unveiling as early as next year and release in 2027, will prioritize AI and connectivity over an initial display. They aim to compete with Meta's offerings in the AR glasses market, appealing to both tech enthusiasts and fashion-conscious users alike.
