Arrowhead Acknowledges Helldivers 2's Massive 140GB PC File Size, Working on Solutions

Arrowhead Game Studios has acknowledged the large file size of Helldivers 2 on PC, which has grown to over 140GB, and is exploring long-term solutions to reduce it. The studio has addressed player concerns and is working on engine improvements and data compression to improve load times.

The large file size of Helldivers 2 on PC is primarily due to data duplication, implemented to optimize performance for older storage media like mechanical Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and optical discs. However, this has resulted in the PC version being around triple the size of the same game on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Arrowhead has stated that they are taking player concerns about file size seriously but acknowledges that finding a solution is not easy. They are carefully considering the trade-offs between loading times and installation size to find a better balance. While they have made some small gains by removing unused assets in the next update, they are unsure how many players are still using mechanical HDDs, making it difficult to determine the impact of reducing data duplication.
