Audi's Virtual Power Plant Project Links Cars to Grid for Sustainability
Audi is expanding its focus beyond car manufacturing, integrating vehicles into a connected environment. Ford is exploring services that combine cars and various life areas, with a key project creating a virtual power plant.
The project, led by Dr. Hagen Seifert, head of sustainable product concepts at Audi, involves pre-qualifying cars to feed power back into the grid. This creates a smart grid with connected home storage units, optimizing self-consumption of solar power and reducing electricity costs for PV system operators.
The model project, involving unspecified partners alongside Audi in Ingolstadt and Zurich, marks the first interaction with the power grid. It aims to balance out fluctuations and stabilize grid frequency, a crucial step for grid stability.
Audi's Smart Energy Network links cars, homes, and power supply in an intelligent grid. The project, using Ampard's software, combines photovoltaic systems and stationary battery storage. It demonstrates Audi's commitment to exploring services beyond the car, contributing to a more sustainable future.
