Auto Dealer in Ontario to Receive Fraud Alert for VIN Infiltration as Car Thefts Surge: Carfax Warning System

Revamped and Streamlined:

In a bid to tackle the escalating issue of auto theft and VIN fraud, Carfax Canada introduced a groundbreaking tool in Ontario - the VIN Fraud Check. This tool notifies car dealers if a VIN shows signs of potential fraud or if the vehicle has been reported stolen in North America, according to Carfax Canada's CEO, Shawn Vording.

During a news conference in Halton Region, Vording revealed that Ontario has witnessed a drastic increase in auto thefts in recent years. He expressed concerns about the financial and complicated implications that come along with VIN fraud, which is a significant concern for Ontarians today. Vording further estimates that about 127,000 fraudulent, cloned VINs are registered in the province.

Toronto police have reported a boost in VIN fraud cases in recent times as auto thefts soar across Ontario and the country. In 2023, the Toronto police disclosed an alleged scheme involving ServiceOntario employees who allegedly used fake documents to register counterfeit VINs to legitimate licence plates. The increase in such fraud prompted the Ford government to propose new legislation that, if passed, would lead to a new provincial offence for fraudulent vehicle registrations, potentially resulting in jail time and penalties of up to $100,000 if convicted.

Carfax will provide the VIN Fraud Check tool free of charge to dealers who access vehicle history reports through Carfax. Vording emphasized that by partnering closely with vehicle dealers, local police, and the provincial government, they are providing Canadian dealers with the tools necessary to detect and avert potential VIN fraud.

It's worth noting that auto theft insurance claims costs in Ontario have skyrocketed, increasing by 524% between 2018 and 2023, surpassing $1 billion in 2023 for the first time. This surge in thefts correlates with increased VIN fraud as stolen vehicles often have their VINs altered or cloned for resale or export.

In response to this growing crisis, we can expect regulatory and industry communities to introduce stricter measures to prevent stolen vehicles from being exported overseas, improve vehicle security, and directly address the VIN fraud issue. However, further details regarding the proposed legislation have yet to be specified.

  2. In light of the escalating problem of auto thefts and fraudulent VINs, Ontario politics is considering new legislation that could lead to jail time and penalties of up to $100,000 for fraudulent vehicle registrations.
  3. As auto theft insurance claims costs in Ontario skyrocket and surpass $1 billion in 2023, the technology sector is anticipated to introduce stricter measures to prevent stolen vehicles from being exported, improve vehicle security, and address the VIN fraud issue.
  4. In addition to partnering with vehicle dealers and local police, Carfax intends to protect Ontarians from fraudulent activities by providing the VIN Fraud Check tool free of charge to dealers who access vehicle history reports through Carfax.
