Autonomous Train Tested on 10-kilometer Chennai Metro Route
Get Excited, Chennai! Driverless Trains Are Coming Your Way!
The buzz around Chennai is electric as the city prepares for a major leap in its public transportation system. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited recently conducted a trial run of a driverless train on a 10-km stretch, marking a significant milestone in the development of Phase II of the project.
The trial took place between Poonamallee and Porur metro stations, part of the Phase II project that's planned to open to the public by December. This isn't the first time a driverless train has been tested in the city—a three-km stretch, till Mullai Thottam, previously hosted a trial.
M. A. Siddique, the managing director of the project, expressed his excitement stating, "The extension of testing and trials today marks a significant milestone in the progress of the Phase-2 project of CRML." The city already boasts a 54.1-km metro rail route, with the ambitious Phase 2 project aiming to add a 118.9-km metro line, connecting Madhavaram, Sholinganallur, Light House, Poonamallee, and Siruseri, among other areas. The project is a mix of 76.3km elevated lines and 42.6km underground lines.
The Phase 1 of the metro connects Airport, Wimco Nagar, St Thomas Mount, and Chennai Central, with a daily passenger traffic of 86.6 lakh every month. The Phase II project is set to become a lifesaver for the densely populated pockets of the city, including the IT Corridor, home to thousands of techies.
Software professional Easwaran Ram, who works in Porur, shared, "When I went to Japan, I saw how people in Tokyo use the metro. I'd love to take a metro to travel to other places like the airport." Antony, an entrepreneur on the IT corridor, shared his sentiments, stating, "This morning, it took me 90 minutes to drive 21.4 km. The metro will definitely be faster and reliable."
With Phase 2 adding a substantial length to Chennai's metro network, the city promises to embark on a smoother, faster, and more efficient transport system!
