Berlin's Accessibility Push: Two Bus Stops on Rigaer Straße Get Barrier-Free Makeover
Berlin is enhancing accessibility for visually impaired individuals. This week, renovation work begins at two bus stops on the Rigaer Straße in the Ostseeviertel. The project aims to make the stops barrier-free, marking the completion of a phase in the city's overall renovation project.
The renovation, expected to finish by September 5th, will see new curbs installed to facilitate bus boarding. The area around the Montessori School is also being rebuilt to be accessible, with paving stones featuring tactile grooves for orientation assistance. The Tiefbau- und Grünflächenamt has renovated 29 bus stops citywide since 2022, with 15 belonging to this specific project. The street will be closed alternately during the work, and the entire bus stop area will be raised by approximately 20 meters to achieve barrier-free access.
Upon completion, these renovations will improve accessibility for visually impaired individuals, making public transport more inclusive. The Tiefbau- und Grünflächenamt, with the involvement of the Straßen- und Grünflächenamt, continues to work towards this goal, with more barrier-free modifications planned from 2026.
