Berlin's Euro 2024 Fan Mile: Giant Pop-Up Park with Artificial Turf
Berlin is preparing for the UEFA Euro 2024 football tournament with a distinctive fan experience. The fan mile on the Straße des 17. Juni will transform into a massive pop-up park, featuring an artificial turf area of around 24,000 square meters, costing approximately 1.2 million euros. The Greens, however, have criticized the use of artificial turf for ecological reasons.
The artificial turf will stretch from the Straße des 17. Juni to the Yitzhak-Rabin-Straße, providing a lively meeting place for fans. A gigantic goal frame will frame the historic Brandenburg Gate, adding to the spectacle. The successful bidder, chosen through a competitive process, is obligated to ensure the turf remains dry and clean throughout the tournament. After the event, the turf will be reused on several football pitches in Berlin.
The Greens have voiced their concern about the environmental impact of artificial turf. They advocate for a renunciation of its use due to ecological reasons. Despite their reservations, the project is set to proceed, aiming to enhance the fan experience during the tournament.
The artificial turf for the UEFA Euro 2024 Fan Mile is scheduled to be installed following the signing of the contract in January. While the Greens express ecological concerns, the project moves forward, promising a unique and engaging fan experience at the Brandenburg Gate this summer.
