Bitcoin Origin Unveiled: Peter Todd Claimed as Cryptocurrency Pioneer

Last night's HBO airing of the Bitcoin docuseries, Money Electric, caused a stir with its unveiling of the alleged identity of the cryptocurrency's elusive creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Journalist Cullen Hoback dived deep into the enigma, concluding that programmer Peter Todd was the man behind the mask.

However, Todd has vocally denied the claims, describing himself as a trickster and a troll in the documentary. Other interviewees labeled him as a "contrarian." A youngster when Bitcoin first emerged, Todd did post on BitcoinTalk, a forum Satoshi was active on before disappearing from the digital landscape.

After the exposé, Todd addressed the claims to CNN, stating, "For the record, I’m not Satoshi. Cullen is grasping for straws here. He is playing up a few coincidences into something much more." According to Hoback, the crux of his theory revolves around a Satoshi post on BitcoinTalk detailing aspects of the currency's code. Todd responded to the thread, correcting an error in Satoshi's post. Hoback interprets this as Todd finishing a thought that Satoshi started.

In the documentary, Hoback edits the post's end to make it appear that Todd's thoughts align more closely with Satoshi's than they truly do. Hoback also pointed out that Satoshi was active during the summer, a pattern Todd exhibited given his academic schedule at the time. Both figures used British English spelling and evidence exists suggesting Todd attempted to invent something similar when he was just 15 years old. To add, an old resume of Todd's was removed from the internet, where he boasted about his C++ proficiency – the language Bitcoin was written in.

When confronted with this data at the end of the film, Todd seemed unphased, laughing off the evidence and stating, "It's ludicrous, but it's the sort of theory that someone who spends their time as a documentary journalist would come up with." Todd maintained that the goal was to make Bitcoin a global currency, and distractions like this could potentially aid in achieving that goal.

The reaction from the cryptocurrency community has been firm rejection of the theory. In the film, Bitcoin ambassador Samson Mow declared, "Peter was ruled out a long time ago." Critics have already dubbed the documentary a poorly researched hatchet job. In Todd's defense, he voiced his displeasure about not being allowed to screen the film before its release. Hoback, unsurprised by Todd's response, admitted to CNN, "Peter's got next-level game theory." After airing, articles are swirling across the cryptocurrency world, criticizing the documentary and advocating for further research.

  1. The tech community has expressed a firm rejection of journalist Cullen Hoback's theory suggesting that programmer Peter Todd is the actual creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.
  2. In the documentary, it's noted that Todd's academic schedule matches the pattern of Satoshi's activity, as both figures used British English spelling and exhibited similar interests in coding languages like C++.
  3. Interestingly, an old resume of Todd's was discovered online, showcasing his proficiency in C++ – the language Bitcoin was written in – which has led some to speculate about his potential role in creating Bitcoin.
  4. When presented with the evidence towards the end of the film, Todd responded with a laugh, stating it was a ludicrous theory, but acknowledging that such speculation could potentially aid in achieving the goal of making Bitcoin a global technology.
