Bitdefender's Threat Debrief: Ransomware Surge in December 2022
Bitdefender's latest Threat Debrief report has shed light on the December 2022 cyber-attack landscape. It highlights the top ransomware families, most impacted countries, and other significant trends.
The report identified 207 ransomware families, affecting 147 countries worldwide. The top 10 ransomware families and the most impacted countries are listed in the report. Notably, the United States experienced the highest share of ransomware cases, with 54%, followed by the United Kingdom (7%) and Germany (6%).
Spear phishing attacks often initiate the infection process, with ransomware being the final stage. Opportunistic adversaries and RaaS groups prefer volume over higher-value targets, leading to an increase in their percentage. The report also lists the top 10 most common targets for phishing sites.
Seven Android trojans were prevalent in December 2022, including SMSSend.AYE and Downloader.DN. Homograph attacks, targeting international domain names to spoof legitimate URLs, were also observed.
The Bitdefender report underscores the evolving threat landscape, with ransomware and phishing attacks remaining prominent. The United States, United Kingdom, and Germany were significantly impacted. As cyber threats continue to adapt, understanding these trends is crucial for effective cybersecurity strategies.
