BlackCat Ransomware Attack on HWL Ebsworth Exposes Sensitive Data of Major Banks and Agencies
A major cyber-attack on HWL Ebsworth has sparked alarm across Australian boardrooms and agencies. The BlackCat ransomware gang breached the law firm's systems, stealing 4 terabytes of sensitive data, including client information and financial details. ANZ, among other banks, is affected, with the Australian government now stepping up cybersecurity efforts.
The attack, which occurred recently, saw the BlackCat group infiltrate HWL Ebsworth's systems. They accessed and stole a vast amount of data, including confidential information from numerous ASX-listed companies and government agencies like the ACCC and Australian Federal Police. The law firm obtained an injunction to halt further data release and refused to pay the AUD5 million ransom demand, leading the gang to leak some data.
ANZ confirmed it is a client of HWL Ebsworth and is working to understand and address potential exposure. The bank will notify impacted employees and customers. At least four other Australian banks - Westpac, NAB, and Commonwealth Bank - are also affected. This incident is not an isolated case; PwC Australia recently confirmed a data loss in the May MOVEit hack.
In response to these attacks, the Australian Government will appoint Air Vice-Marshal Darren Goldie as the first coordinator of cybersecurity on June 23. This move highlights the government's commitment to strengthening the nation's cybersecurity defenses.
The cyber-attack on HWL Ebsworth, involving the BlackCat ransomware gang, has underscored the vulnerability of sensitive data in the hands of third-party service providers. With major banks and government agencies affected, the incident has sparked concern nationwide. The Australian Government's appointment of a cybersecurity coordinator signals a proactive approach to protecting the country's digital infrastructure.
