In a significant move towards electrifying its fleet, Munich police have introduced the BMW i5 in full Polizei livery. This development, showcased at BMW Welt earlier in 2025, marks a continuation of Munich's long-standing partnership with BMW.

The BMW i5, electrically powered and outfitted by specialist supplier Haberl, is not a newcomer to Munich's streets. The Munich police have been using an i5 as a patrol car for some time now. This latest addition to the fleet is a testament to the growing lineup of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids designed for police use by BMW.

The BMW i5 joins the ranks of other BMW authority vehicles, such as the 5 Series Tourings, 3 Series wagons, and electric pilots, that have been providing service to Munich and Bavarian police for years. The i5 integrates cleanly with BMW's long-running authority-vehicle program, offering factory-engineered electrical interfaces, cargo solutions, and lighting control, which are crucial for police conversions and day-to-day usability.

The i5 is a departure from earlier models like the i3, addressing the range and packaging limitations that were problematic a decade ago for all-purpose patrol. It is a larger, faster-charging, long-range EV on a modern electrical architecture that better fits equipment, people, and shift patterns.

This year's Munich Auto Show saw a high-visibility electric patrol car, the BMW i5, working the streets, timing could not have been better given the high police presence at the event. In 2021, the Munich Auto Show had a police deployment of approximately 8,000 officers.

Munich's partnership with BMW dates back seventy years. In the 1950s, BMW 501 and 502 cars were used by Munich's police, nicknamed the "Barockengel". More recently, in 2020, the latest G21 3 Series Touring (320d) was added to Munich's fleet.

Photos of the i5 in its full Polizei livery were taken by quirin_schoen. There is a documented, fully marked i5 Touring (G61) stationed in Munich, indicating it is being evaluated and used for front-line work.

The fact that BMW is showcasing EVs and hybrids designed for police use is a new development, as it was not explicitly stated in earlier facts. However, the mention of the i5 as part of this lineup implies that BMW is indeed showcasing such vehicles.

Munich formally took delivery of BMW i3 patrol cars in 2015 as a sustainable city unit. With the introduction of the BMW i5, it is clear that Munich is electrifying parts of its fleet.
