The automotive world is abuzz with anticipation as BMW prepares to unveil its latest electric vehicle (EV), the iX3 SUV. Set to debut in 2026, this ground-breaking model marks the beginning of a new era for BMW, serving as the foundation for its next generation of vehicles.

The iX3 will be BMW's first production model under the Neue Klasse platform, a technology that promises to revolutionise the automotive industry. Neue Klasse technology will not be exclusive to EVs, but will also appear in upcoming combustion-engine models, signalling BMW's commitment to a sustainable future.

The iX3 SUV will be produced at BMW's Debrecen plant in Hungary, a testament to the company's global manufacturing capabilities. The new model features regular side mirrors, a closed-off kidney grille with illuminated contours, and slim headlights similar to the earlier concept. It will also debut updated digital features, including a panoramic display, a 3D head-up display, and BMW's Operating System X.

Under the hood, the iX3 will utilise BMW's sixth-generation batteries and new electric motor technology. The base iX3 xDrive50 delivers an impressive 469 hp with all-wheel drive, a 108 kWh battery, and a range of up to 500 miles on the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle and 800 km on the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) cycle. A long-wheelbase version for China, planned for 2026, is expected to offer an even more impressive range of up to 900 km under the CLTC (China Light-duty Vehicle Test Cycle) conditions.

For those seeking more performance, higher-performance M-badged derivatives of the iX3 could follow. These models, including the BMW iX3 M Sport and M Sport Pro, will feature sportier body kits and larger wheels, refining performance and style.

The global EV market is intensifying, with rivals like Tesla's Model Y already well established. However, the iX3's ability to support fast charging, with 350 km of range claimed to be recoverable in just 10 minutes, could give it a competitive edge.

The level of automation for the iX3's driver assistance systems will depend on regional regulations. Regardless, the iX3 represents BMW's foundation for its next generation of vehicles, promising a future of innovation, sustainability, and unparalleled driving experiences.

In addition to the iX3 SUV, BMW has also announced plans to produce the i3 sedan in Munich in 2026. This marks a significant milestone for BMW, as the i3 will be the company's first fully electric sedan.

As BMW continues to push the boundaries of EV technology, the iX3 SUV stands as a shining example of the company's commitment to a sustainable future. With its impressive range, innovative technology, and sleek design, the iX3 is poised to redefine the EV market.
