BMW Showcases Digital Advancement at CES: Distance Driving, Personalized Assistant, Entertainments, and Augmented Reality

BMW is making waves at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, unveiling a host of new features designed to revolutionise the driving experience.

In a significant breakthrough, BMW has successfully demonstrated stable Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) content for passengers in moving vehicles, even in challenging driving situations. This advancement is made possible by connecting the AR/MR device's tracking system to the vehicle's sensor data.

One of the key innovations on display is the "XREAL Air 2" AR glasses, developed by US-based developer Xreal. These glasses are set to enrich the driving experience by embedding navigation, hazard information, points of interest, and entertainment content into the real environment.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also set to become more powerful in vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System 9. The assistant will be enhanced with the Alexa Large Language Model (LLM), making it the ultimate vehicle expert enabled by generative AI.

BMW is also showcasing new infotainment features, including remote driving of the BMW iX, augmented reality glasses, and an enhanced Intelligent Personal Assistant. The company is also demonstrating the use of AR glasses for the first time, providing a glimpse into a future where navigation, hazard information, and entertainment content are seamlessly integrated into the driving experience.

The Video App, first introduced in the new BMW 5 Series, is now available in BMW Operating Systems 8.5 and 9. The app offers a variety of video content, including live channels and on-demand media libraries, and is available in countries such as the USA, UK, South Korea, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and soon Japan. The Video App's portfolio includes platforms like Pluto TV, Bloomberg, TED, Yahoo!, and Chili, as well as country-specific streaming offers.

New gaming highlights will be available for the ConnectedDrive Store in BMW Operating System 9, including games that can be played with full-fledged gaming controllers. The AirConsole app, which already allows BMW and MINI customers to play games in their vehicles, is also set to receive updates.

BMW and MINI models equipped with BMW Operating System 9 come with a 90-day free trial of BMW Digital Premium. This package includes a range of digital services, such as the Video App, ConnectedDrive Services, and the Intelligent Personal Assistant.

In addition to these innovations, BMW and Valeo are working in a strategic partnership on the joint development of next-generation automated Level 4 parking solutions, including automated valet parking (AVP). Visitors at CES 2024 can try out remote-controlled valet parking, which provides control in situations where fully autonomous systems may face major challenges, such as complex or unknown environments.

BMW's journey with AR/MR technology began in 2008, and over the years, the company has presented various projects, including the MINI Augmented Vision project, collaborations with Meta Reality Labs, the ConnectedRide Smartglasses from BMW Motorrad, and the M Mixed Reality Driving Experience.

With these advancements, BMW is positioning itself at the forefront of automotive technology, offering a more immersive, connected, and entertaining driving experience for its customers. The future of BMW is undoubtedly exciting, and CES 2024 is just the beginning.
