BMW X3 M electric production rumored to commence in November 2027

BMW is gearing up for an electric revolution, with several new electric M models on the horizon. Here's a rundown of the exciting changes and additions to the BMW lineup.

Anyone seeking a fully-fledged M model will soon have to consider going electric or looking for a used "F97" model. BMW is preparing to launch an electric X3 M, codenamed "ZA5," which will be built at the new Debrecen plant in Hungary, starting production in November 2027. The electric X3 M will join the standard iX3 model in production at the same time.

The electric X3 M is expected to outmuscle the iX3 50 xDrive with its horsepower, but the M Performance variant, codenamed M60, could push past 600 horsepower. If the first prototypes for the X3 M electric version are seen in 2026, as rumoured, it suggests an exciting development in the pipeline.

BMW is also working on another gasoline-powered M3, known internally as "G84." The sedan, codenamed "ZA0," is scheduled to enter production in March 2027, and a crossover counterpart is rumoured to join the lineup. The i4 M50, BMW M's best-selling product for the past three years, sets a high bar for these new models.

The production of the electrically powered BMW X3 M in Hungary in 2027 is not the only electric M model on the horizon. Additional electric Ms, including an i3 Touring and possible i4 coupe and convertible derivatives, are almost certainly on the way before the end of the decade.

Meanwhile, BMW is ensuring that large combustion engines will remain part of the BMW lineup for the foreseeable future. The inline-six (S58) and V8 (S68) engines are being reworked to meet Euro 7 standards. The new X3 M with the M Performance variant could sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) faster than the 4.9 seconds posted by the iX3 50 xDrive, with the X3 M with an inline-six being the top combustion-powered version.

The new X3 M electric version and the upcoming i3 sedan are set to roll off the line in Munich. However, the long production cycle of the base G45 X3 may allow BMW M's plans to change in the future.

Stay tuned for more updates on BMW's exciting electric future!
