BMW Z8's Birth: Pioneering Aluminum Frame and Power Evolution
BMW's iconic Z8 roadster was born from an innovative and costly aluminum space frame, a first for the automaker. Its development was championed by key figures and evolved significantly over time.
The Z8's journey began with an aluminum space frame, a novel and expensive choice for BMW. Andreas Bovensiepen, now ALPINA's head, previously engineered this project management at BMW. Despite high part costs, the project was feasible due to low development and tooling expenses. Henrik Fisker, the lead developer, played a pivotal role in keeping costs low.
Wolfgang Reitzle, a strong advocate for the Z8, battled BMW's bean counters to get the project approved. Initially, the Z8 was powered by a 4.4-liter V8 engine, generating around 286 horsepower. Later, it was upgraded to the 4.9-liter S62 V8 from the E39 M5, boosting power to 400 horsepower. BMW accountants initially worried about using E39 M5 running gear in the Z8, but the upgrade proved beneficial. Notably, the Z8 was developed as a BMW AG project, not a BMW M project.
The BMW Z8, born from innovative engineering and championed by influential figures, evolved significantly during its development. Its powerful engine and unique design made it a standout roadster, despite initial champion concerns.
