BMW's electric SUV, the iX3, is preparing for its impending unveiling
Next week, BMW is set to unveil its latest addition to the electric vehicle (EV) market - the iX3. This SUV marks a significant milestone in BMW's modern history, being the first production model of the company's much-anticipated New Class project, due for completion in 2026.
The iX3, codenamed "NA5", is inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse X concept from last year. It retains the vertical orientation of the grille, a feature exclusive to SUVs in BMW's lineup. The grille features an illuminated contour similar to the concept and current BMW models, while the closed-off kidneys incorporate more LED elements than the concept. The hood of the iX3 flaunts a center recess bearing the iconic roundel.
Conventional side mirrors can be found on the iX3, unlike the Vision Neue Klasse X, further indicating that it is the production model rather than the concept. The headlights of the iX3 are nearly identical to those of the Vision Neue Klasse.
All iX3s will be powered by sixth-generation round-cell batteries, powering new electric motors. BMW is likely to broaden the iX3 lineup later with a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive variant. The iX3 50 xDrive promises an impressive range of 400 miles (644 kilometers) under the EPA test cycle and 800 kilometers (497 miles) on WLTP.
In addition to the iX3, BMW has announced plans to produce an i3 sedan in Munich in 2026, joining the iX3 in the Neue Klasse era. BMW is also planning to launch a long-wheelbase variant for China next year, offering a range of 900 kilometers (559 miles) per CLTC.
The groundbreaking tech developed for these models won't be exclusive to EVs; combustion cars will also adopt iDrive X and Panoramic Vision. Sedans and potentially other body styles will adopt wider kidneys, as previewed by the 2023 Neue Klasse sedan concept.
The iX3 will be built at BMW's new Debrecen plant in Hungary. Reports suggest M Performance and even full-fat M derivatives will be added to the iX3 lineup, adding a sporty edge to this already exciting new offering from BMW.
The iX3 represents BMW's largest single investment to date, signifying a pivotal moment in the company's modern history. With its blend of innovative technology, iconic design, and performance-focused options, the iX3 is poised to make a lasting impact in the EV market.
