The UK government's decision to include air-to-air heat pumps in its low-carbon Boiler Upgrade Scheme is set to offer numerous benefits and potential impacts.

However, it's worth noting that air-to-air heat pumps do not usually provide hot water, requiring a separate low-carbon solution. In the UK, home air conditioning is rare compared to southern Europe, with growing concerns over energy demand and carbon targets as the climate crisis intensifies.

Andrew Sissons, deputy director at Nesta, states that British households should not have reservations about using air-to-air heat pumps for cooling. The International Energy Agency predicts that cooling demand could double by 2050, potentially straining electricity grids and climate goals. This underscores the importance of adopting low-carbon cooling solutions like air-to-air heat pumps.

The British National Energy System Operator's modelling forecasts a virtually zero-carbon electricity grid by the end of the decade, accounting for growing demand from electric vehicles, heat pumps, and data centers. This shift towards renewable energy sources will further support the widespread adoption of air-to-air heat pumps.
