Circle K Hong Kong Hit by Major Network Disruption, Possible Cyberattack
Circle K Hong Kong has been dealing with a network disruption for several days, leaving most electronic payment and loyalty services unavailable. The company is investigating a possible cyberattack as the cause.
Nearly 400 Circle K outlets across Hong Kong are affected, but stores remain open. Customers can still pay using cash or Octopus cards. The disruption has impacted e-payment systems, email services, and loyalty programs, with customers reporting outages and issues with expired points and coupons.
This is not the first time Circle K outlets have faced cyber incidents. In January, a data breach occurred in the U.S., and a ransomware attack was reported in June 2024. Additionally, in 2023, a Circle K dataset containing partial payment card details and employee contact information was exposed online.
Circle K Hong Kong, owned by Alimentation Couche-Tard, is currently working with law enforcement and forensics experts to determine the cause and extent of the breach. The company has not ruled out a possible cyberattack. Customers are advised to use alternative payment methods until the issue is resolved.
