City Implementing 45 Traffic Lights Transition to LED Innovation
In the heart of Germany, the city of Münster is taking a significant step towards a greener and safer future by upgrading all its traffic lights to LED technology. By the end of 2026, the city plans to convert all 293 traffic signal systems it owns, with the remaining 45 signals being completed by that time.
This switch to LED technology is expected to result in a reduction of CO2 emissions, as each traffic light conversion will contribute to this goal. The reduction in emissions is a welcome development as the city continues its efforts to combat climate change.
The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, in collaboration with a specialized company, is leading this transformation. The conversion process is carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption to road traffic. Each traffic light will be out of operation for one to two days during the conversion process, but temporary traffic lights will be provided for larger signal installations.
LED traffic lights offer several advantages. They are brighter and remain visible even in direct sunlight, providing more safety in road traffic. Moreover, the switch to LED technology will continue to reduce energy and maintenance costs by around 50 percent. Since LED traffic lights have a significantly longer lifespan, the costly replacement of incandescent lamps is no longer necessary.
The city is also mindful of the needs of people with visual or hearing impairments. All traffic lights will be equipped with acoustic and visual signals to assist these individuals. The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure will notify facilities such as schools or kindergartens in the vicinity before the conversion of larger signal installations.
The goal of the upgraded traffic light systems is to better accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, public transport, and car traffic. By 2025, around 18 traffic lights in the city area will be converted to the new technology. After the conversion, all 293 signal installations in municipal ownership will have been converted to LED technology.
The city of Münster has been using LED technology in its traffic lights since 2005, with more than 80 percent of the traffic lights already having LED lighting. The conversion of traffic lights to LED technology is part of the city's commitment to sustainability and a greener future.
Corresponding signs and speed limit regulations will be set up for the duration of the conversion. The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure assures that the scheduled completion of the LED technology upgrade by the end of 2026 will not be affected by the conversion process.
As the city of Münster transitions to LED traffic lights, it moves one step closer to a safer, greener, and more energy-efficient city.
