Coinbase Expands Reach in US and Beyond, Targeting Prediction Markets
Coinbase Expands to Become "Everything Exchange"
Coinbase, the popular cryptocurrency exchange, is making a significant move to expand its services, aiming to become a unified platform offering a wide array of asset classes beyond cryptocurrency. This transformation, referred to as the "everything exchange" strategy, was announced on July 31, 2025.
The expansion plan includes the integration of tokenized stocks, derivatives, prediction markets, and early-stage token sales, merging traditional and on-chain asset classes into one platform.
One of the key aspects of this expansion is the launch of CFTC-regulated perpetual futures trading for U.S. customers through Coinbase Financial Markets. This move, effective from July 21, 2025, offers nano Bitcoin and nano Ether perpetual contracts with long expiration dates of 5 years, facilitating flexible derivative trading.
Starting August 2025, Coinbase will also integrate Decentralized Exchange (DEX) trading directly into its U.S. app (excluding New York). This enables users to trade millions of on-chain assets—including real-world asset products from projects such as Centrifuge and Reserve Protocol—without moving funds off-platform.
The inclusion of real-world assets is another significant part of Coinbase's expansion plan. Through DEX trading integration, Coinbase supports tokens linked to real-world asset products, further broadening its asset offerings beyond purely digital assets.
Coinbase's strategy is to start domestically in the U.S. before expanding internationally, adapting to evolving regulatory landscapes. Their goal is to create a “one-stop shop” for all types of assets on-chain, competing directly with platforms like Kraken, which have also introduced tokenized stocks.
This ongoing expansion reflects Coinbase’s vision to bridge traditional finance and decentralized finance by enabling faster, seamless access to diverse asset classes on a unified exchange platform.
The flirtation with prediction markets is not new for Coinbase. In February, CEO Brian Armstrong expressed that prediction markets are a "better source of truth." Prediction markets are indeed part of the new services Coinbase plans to offer as part of their "everything exchange" strategy.
Other companies, such as Robinhood and Kraken, are also expanding their financial clout, reflecting a growing trend in the financial industry. Kalshi, a prediction market platform, has been successful in the entertainment and sports industries by offering a competitive product with potentially higher financial value.
The international rollout of Coinbase's expansion plan will be gradual and dependent on obtaining necessary licenses. As Coinbase continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this shift will impact the broader financial landscape.
