Connectivity Boost in Isolated Hamlets: Accessing Mobile Networks in Rural Areas

In the icy expanses of Yakutia, three remote settlements - Botulu, Erte, and Kharyyalakh - have been recently connected to MegaFon's mobile network, marking a significant leap in their digital access. The telecom giant has deployed fourth-generation base stations in these villages, ultimately providing stable mobile connectivity and rapid internet speeds.

Technical experts from MegaFon tailored the solution based on the specific needs of each settlement. In Erte, a mid-frequency LTE layer was employed, enhancing download speeds and networking capacity to accommodate multiple devices without lag. Conversely, Botulu and Kharyyalakh, characterized by a higher concentration of streets and buildings, necessitated an additional low-frequency layer to facilitate signal transmission over longer distances and improved penetration.

Isolated from major roads and other settlements, Botulu and Erte are tranquil, secluded communities. The introduction of mobile connectivity and the internet has bridged the distance for local residents, enabling them to reach out to distant family members, stay abreast of current events, avail themselves of government services, and find answers to their queries online. Moreover, the network's expansion permits students to expand their knowledge, enables parents to undertake online courses or engage in freelance work, and supports elderly people in consulting with healthcare providers remotely.

Kharyyalakh, snug beside the Verkhnevilyuysky raion center, boasts stores, cultural institutions, an educational establishment, a post office, and a fire station. With the new telecom network, subscribers can now download large files, stream films online, surf blogs, or create their own digital content.

"MegaFon is continuing to expand its telecom network coverage in Yakutia by setting up new base stations and modernizing existing ones. Since the beginning of 2025, our technical team has installed equipment in seven settlements, with Botulu, Kharyyalakh, and Erte being the latest to join the digital age. Subscribers can now enjoy clear mobile connectivity and an average internet speed of 25 Mbps, with peak download speeds of 80 Mbps – ample for quality online entertainment," commented Maria Mamayeva, MegaFon's Director in Yakutia.

MegaFon's ongoing efforts to expand its 4G infrastructure across Russia, with a focus on rural and nationwide connectivity, have been highlighted in recent media coverage. MegaFon provides mobile coverage in all 85 regions of Russia, so it is within their service territory to bring digital connectivity to remote regions such as Yakutia. However, specific confirmations regarding the installation of new base stations in Yakutia remain scattered across public sources, with detailed updates for Botulu, Erte, and Kharyyalakh remaining unconsummated in the most recent assessments.

Smartphones and gadgets are becoming increasingly popular in the remote settlements of Botulu, Erte, and Kharyyalakh as a result of the new mobile network connection provided by MegaFon. With stable mobile connectivity and rapid internet speeds, residents can now access a wide variety of digital content, including videos, blogs, and social media. As technology continues to advance, people in these communities will have more opportunities to stay connected with the world, learn, work, and improve their quality of life.
