Electrified Vehicles Gain Momentum in the Netherlands

The Dutch automotive market is witnessing a significant shift towards electric mobility, with the adoption of electrified vehicles (EVs) on the rise. In October 2023, EVs accounted for an impressive 42% of the country's entire new-car market, marking a steady progression in the Netherlands' journey towards a greener future.

The Dutch EV market is expected to reach a milestone by the end of December 2023, as the plug-in share is anticipated to surpass the halfway mark. This robust electrified vehicle adoption is not limited to the Netherlands alone, as the overall EV transition across Europe is accelerating.

In the Netherlands, the Volvo XC40 Recharge, an all-electric variant, has been a popular choice among consumers. However, specific recent sales figures for the Netherlands are not readily available. The Tesla Model Y, while still a significant player in the European market, experienced a decline in sales across several key European markets, including the Netherlands, in October 2023.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge, however, managed to break the Model Y's winning streak that it had built up in August and September 2023, becoming the most popular electric vehicle (EV) in the Netherlands in October. The Tesla Model Y, with nearly 11,000 registrations between January and October 2023, is still poised to secure the title of best-selling vehicle in the Netherlands for 2023.

Other notable performers in October 2023 include the Volkswagen Group, which placed four models in the top 10, and the Kia Niro, which took third place with 500 registrations. The VW ID.4 also climbed a place to eighth, and the Renault Megane EV is expected to try and surpass the Ford Kuga PHEV next month.

The BMW i4 and BMW iX1 gained traction, moving to 14th and 15th places respectively, while the Peugeot e-2008 went up to 13th place. The 14-place Cupra Born finished the month with 210 registrations, a new best for 2023.

XPeng's G9 posted its first volume month in the Netherlands in October 2023, with 56 units. The G9, competitively priced, starting at €58,000, has the potential to make a significant impact in the market, especially considering it is €13,000 less than the Tesla Model Y Standard Range and €44,000 less than the Tesla Model X.

In the brand ranking, Tesla leads with an 11.1% market share, followed by BMW and Volvo with an 8.4% share each. The Volvo S/V60 PHEV came in 16th place in October 2023, with 202 registrations, a new best result in three years. The Volvo XC40's strong performance could potentially propel it to second place by the end of the year.

The overall new-car market in the Netherlands fell by 2% year on year, reaching a total of 28,362 units in October. Despite this slight dip, the robust growth in EV sales indicates a positive outlook for the Dutch automotive market's transition towards electrification.

As Europe moves towards its goal of reaching nearly half or more EV sales by 2030, the Dutch market is aligning with this trajectory, reflecting a strong transition momentum driven by supportive policies and expanded EV model choices.

  1. The Dutch automotive industry is experiencing a shift towards electric mobility, driven by the finance sector's investment in technology, specifically in the production and distribution of electric-vehicles (EVs).
  2. The growth in finance for automotive technology is not only limited to the Netherlands, as the overall transition towards EVs across Europe's transportation sector is escalating.
  3. Lifestyle choices are also influencing this shift, with consumers increasingly prioritizing electric cars as they align with a greener lifestyle and societal expectations.
  4. As the adoption of EVs continues to escalate in the Dutch market, technology companies are introducing competitive models, such as the XPeng G9, which is competitively priced and has the potential to significantly impact the automotive industry.
