County to publish online interactive map for mobile phone service coverage in Herford

In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Herford district is making strides in enhancing its mobile phone coverage, with a focus on eliminating digital dead zones.

According to the latest data available in the Geoportal (https://geoportal.unserwebsite) or through a direct link, more than 98% of the state's area in North Rhine-Westphalia is covered by at least one network provider with 4G or 5G. This means that an overwhelming majority of the region is connected to modern mobile networks.

However, there are still areas, known as "white spots", where neither 4G nor 5G coverage is available, accounting for 1.4% of the state's area. On the other hand, 11% of the state's area are "grey spots", areas covered by at least one, but not all network providers with 4G or 5G.

District Administrator Jürgen Müller considers mobile measurements an important issue, emphasising that closing these dead zones can promote digital education, ensure safe work environments, and reduce unnecessary travel - benefits that are not only advantageous for people but also the environment.

Jan Ahring, the mobile manager at the district of Herford, has announced that regular measurements of mobile coverage will be conducted to ensure continuous improvement. The basic data on mobile phone coverage at the level of districts and independent cities in North Rhine-Westphalia is updated quarterly in the dashboard.

Mobile communication is seen as essential infrastructure, with its improvement leading to increased connectivity, better communication, promoting economic growth, making education more accessible, and being crucial for emergency communication.

In the 2024 measurement for Herford, the mobile network operators that provided no service in uncovered areas have not been explicitly listed in the available data. However, the district's commitment to regular measurements suggests a proactive approach to addressing these issues.

Stable mobile coverage is considered important for driving technological innovation forward, as it provides a solid foundation for the deployment of new technologies and services. With the Herford district's focus on enhancing mobile coverage, it is poised to contribute significantly to the digital future of North Rhine-Westphalia.
