Critic Evaluates "Death Stranding 2: On the Beach" in Trials: A Graphic Beast Shattering Barriers

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 game, has been exclusively released for the PlayStation 5 on June 26. Developed by Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind the Metal Gear series, this ambitious title promises a more action-oriented and polished experience.

The game's narrative takes place eleven months after the events of the first game, with players once again assuming the role of Sam Porter Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus. The story unfolds across various locations, including Mexico and Australia, offering larger, more secret-filled maps compared to the original game’s Pacific Northwest setting.

One of the key differences between Death Stranding 2 and its predecessor involves notable changes in gameplay, narrative, and features. On the gameplay front, there is a bigger emphasis on combat with new enemy types, such as BTs (Beached Things) and mechs, and new weapons like lightweight and tranquilizer guns. Players can now put down their backpack at any time, making disabling enemy bases easier and blending into tall grass.

Navigating the expansive maps has been made smoother with improved ladder and rope mechanics, flexible ziplines, and new vehicles like the Tri-Cruiser. Fast travel options have also been enhanced with a monorail system. Dynamic weather and natural disasters actively influence gameplay, adding to the challenge and immersion.

The sequel places a stronger emphasis on non-lethal tactics and introduces corpse disposal mechanics. New equipment, such as blood-infused weapons and multiple MP-infused ranged weapons, are introduced to tackle BT threats more effectively.

In terms of narrative, Death Stranding 2's narrative is described as less fussy and more tightly written, with a faster pace and more direct engagement with the player. It is considered to rival Kojima's best work from the Metal Gear series in terms of story quality. The sequel also features more frequent missions into enemy territory, resulting in more combat scenarios.

New narrative mechanics, such as dialogue choices and skill trees, deepen player engagement and role-playing options. The game also introduces a skill tree for Sam, allowing for upgrades such as improved shooting efficiency and extended battery life for vehicles.

Death Stranding 2 also boasts a larger arsenal of weapons compared to the first installment. Hollywood stars Léa Seydoux and George Miller join the cast of the game, adding star power to the already impressive lineup.

The game is set to cost around 80 euros and offers a more streamlined, action-oriented, and expansive experience compared to the original. With its stunning graphics, detailed, dynamic game world, and immersive narrative, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious and awe-inspiring open-world games.

In Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, players can expect a diverse array of gadgets and advanced technology integrated within the game, including lightweight and tranquilizer guns, as well as new vehicles like the Tri-Cruiser, enhancing their exploration and navigation experience. The entertainment value of the game is further elevated by the presence of Hollywood stars Léa Seydoux and George Miller, adding star power to the already impressive lineup.
