Cybercrime Surges in Australia: ACSC Reports 76,000 Incidents, Dr. Marcus Thompson Joins Hyprfire

The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) reported a significant surge in cybercrime, with a 13% increase in incidents to 76,000 in the 2021-22 financial year. Major General (Ret'd) Dr Marcus Thompson, AM, PhD, has been appointed as Strategic Advisor and Advisory Board member of Hyprfire, a move that could bolster the country's cyber defence strategies.

The ACSC's latest figures reveal a worrying trend, with cybercrime reports jumping to 76,000. Dr. Marcus Thompson, a leading expert in cyber defence, attributed this to Australia's attractiveness as an easy target. The average cost per cybercrime report also rose by 14% for businesses of all sizes, reaching over $39,000 for small businesses, $88,000 for medium-sized, and $62,000 for large enterprises.

In response to these challenges, Hyprfire has appointed Dr. Thompson to its advisory board. Tim Jones, Managing Director of Hyprfire, expressed excitement about the appointment, citing Dr. Thompson's extensive expertise in Australia's cyber defence landscape. Dr. Thompson will join Hyprfire's executives in driving the company's growth. He advises Australian organisations to shift from passive to active cybersecurity strategies, including improving network visibility. Dr. Thompson believes Hyprfire's capabilities can significantly enhance active cyber defences for organisations of all sizes.

The increasing number of cybercrime reports and their rising costs underscore the urgent need for robust cyber defence strategies in Australia. Dr. Marcus Thompson's appointment to Hyprfire's advisory board signals a commitment to strengthening the country's cybersecurity posture, with a focus on improving network visibility and active defence strategies.
