Cybersecurity Awareness Month Turns 20: 'Secure Our World'
October marks the 20th anniversary of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a global initiative that began in 2004. This year's theme, 'Secure Our World', is championed by the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the UK's National Cyber Crime Unit (NCA).
The initiative started in Europe in 2012, led by the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) and the European Commission. It promotes four key steps to online safety: enabling multifactor authentication, keeping software up-to-date, being cautious of phishing attempts, and using strong passwords.
Jeff Reich of the Information Systems Security Association (IDSA) and Stephen Gorham of OPSWAT have both emphasized the importance of global cybersecurity awareness and proactive measures. Reich commented on the necessity of widespread understanding, while Gorham stressed the need for continuous vigilance.
As Cybersecurity Awareness Month celebrates its 20th year, it continues to remind us all of the importance of staying safe online. With the support of CISA, NCA, ENISA, and the European Commission, the initiative promotes practical steps for individuals and organizations to protect themselves and contribute to a more secure digital world.
