Daimler Buses Leads Europe's Electric Bus Shift With Charging Infrastructure
Daimler Buses is leading the charge in Europe's shift to electric buses. The company is not only manufacturing electric bus variants but also constructing public charging infrastructure, a first among European manufacturers. Talks are ongoing with various cities and regions to assess demand and plan further expansion.
Daimler Buses has been offering electric city bus variants since 2018, with plans to introduce electric intercity models by 2026 and tourist buses by the end of the decade. Unlike city buses, excursion and tourist buses cannot charge at depots, necessitating public charging infrastructure. To facilitate this, Daimler Buses is setting an impetus by offering solutions and constructing charging infrastructure through a subsidiary.
In Cologne, a pilot project is set to create four public charging points on a parking lot west of the Rhine in 2023. These fast-charging columns will be usable by buses of any brand, serving intercity and tourist buses visiting the city's cathedral. The company is also in negotiations with other cities and regions to analyze and plan further expansion of this infrastructure.
Daimler Buses' commitment to electric buses extends beyond manufacturing. By building public charging infrastructure, the company is paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future for bus travel, especially on tourist routes and in remote destinations. The Cologne pilot project is a significant step in this direction, with more initiatives planned in the coming years.
