Dark-inspired timepiece by CIGA defies convention by actively absorbing light, mimicking the behavior of a black hole

In the vast expanse of watch design, the latest collaboration between CIGA Design and Swiss atelier Label Noir, the Black Star, stands out as a celestial marvel. This timepiece, inspired by the enigmatic beauty of deep space and the mystery of black holes, offers a unique aesthetic that is both captivating and functional.

The heart of the Black Star lies within its dial, a single-piece domed design that represents a black hole. The outer dial employs CMYK gradient printing to depict galaxies, with blue pixelated arcs and scattered white stars on a black background. But the real spectacle is the central black hole, an 8.5mm deep concave pit coated in Super Black pigment that absorbs 99.6% of visible light, creating a void-like effect.

The time display is unconventional yet intuitive. A luminous polar star hand orbits above the black hole, while luminous hour and minute rings encircle this cosmic centrepiece, all coated with Super-LumiNova to pop vividly in low light against the black hole’s light-absorptive centre.

The Black Star's 46mm round case is made of Grade 2 titanium with a black DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating, giving it a sleek, durable, and deep-black finish that complements the cosmic theme. The case has an integrated lug design, a 15.6mm thickness, and a single protruding 6mm crown at 3 o’clock, contributing to a clean, minimalist silhouette.

Inside, the watch houses the Swiss-made CIGA CD-04-S automatic movement, an evolved caliber featuring the brand’s Asynchronous-follow Technology. This mechanism results in the hour ring rotating 30 degrees and the minute ring rotating 390 degrees, powered at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of 41 hours and accuracy of +15/-30 seconds per day.

The Black Star is equipped with a black fluororubber strap, continuing the all-black, space-age look, and includes a quick-release system for easy strap swapping. The watch is water-resistant to 30 meters (3 ATM), suitable for everyday use but not for deep water activities.

The Black Star departs from the normal blue colour of the original Blue Planet concept, offering a black hole-inspired dial that adds a new dimension to the collection. Each purchase comes with custom packaging made from recycled paper, and a handwritten letter from Label Noir. Unlike previous Blue Planet releases, the Black Star is not a limited edition.

Priced at $1,980, the Label Noir Black Star is available now through CIGA Design's website. Its contrast between the light-absorbing central black hole and the glowing time indicators creates a spectacle in darkness, making it a perfect companion for those who dare to explore the mysteries of the universe on their wrist.

This watch, the Label Noir Black Star, embodies a unique blend of style and technology, positioning itself as a innovative wearable gadget in the realms of watch design. Its celestial-inspired design, featuring a single-piece domed dial representing a black hole, along with an unconventional yet intuitive time display, sets it apart as a standout piece among gadgets and watches. The Black Star's 46mm case, made of black DLC-coated Grade 2 titanium, adds to its sleek and durable aesthetic, making it an intriguing choice for those who seek a functional and fashionable timepiece reflecting the mystery of deep space.
