Discourse on "The Equality Machine" Featuring Orly Lobel
On November 8, 2022, the Center for Data Innovation is hosting a conversation with Orly Lobel, author of the new book The Equality Machine. The discussion, which will take place from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (EST), is open to the public and registration is required to attend.
In her book, Lobel proposes that society can harness digital technology to address global challenges such as climate, poverty, literacy, health, safety, and accessibility. She advocates for a shift from a top-down, proprietary approach to an inclusive, equity-focused model where technology is a tool to democratize opportunity and address systemic inequalities in multiple social domains.
Lobel's vision involves empowering users and communities to participate actively in shaping technology, deploying AI to improve health outcomes, using technology to improve literacy and education, ensuring fairness and preventing discrimination in AI and digital tools, and supporting global sustainability and climate goals.
Daniel Castro, Director of the Center for Data Innovation, will moderate the conversation. The discussion will focus on Lobel's book and its discussion of technology's potential benefits for society, particularly in addressing social issues. Questions for the speakers can be asked online.
