Ducati's Latest Electric Motorcycle Features Innovative Battery Technology of the Future

The motorcycling world is abuzz with excitement as Ducati, a renowned name in the industry and a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, unveils the Ducati V21L prototype equipped with innovative solid-state battery cells developed by QuantumScape.

Claudio Domenicali, Ducati's CEO, has been at the helm of this groundbreaking project. Speaking about the new technology, Domenicali expressed his belief that the high energy density achieved with solid-state technology is a perfect fit for a high-performance vehicle like a sport motorcycle.

The solid-state battery cells used in the updated Ducati V21L prototype are based on the design of the racer used in the MotoE World Championship. These cells, known as the 980 QSE-5 cells, utilise a lithium metal anode and a ceramic separator.

The potential impact of this prototype extends beyond the motorcycling industry. The improved energy density, fast charging capability, safety, and lifecycle of the solid-state battery could revolutionise the wider automotive world in the United States and beyond.

The Ducati V21L prototype, which made its debut at the Munich's IAA Mobility event, is currently undergoing testing. The weight and range of the solid-state battery in the prototype have not been revealed, but the updates promise significant improvements over traditional lithium-ion batteries.

It's important to note that the Volkswagen Group has been working with QuantumScape, a Californian battery specialist, for over a decade to bring solid-state cells into road-going cars. This collaboration is not new, and it underscores Ducati's commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric mobility in the United States.

As the Ducati V21L prototype hits the track in the coming months, it serves not just as a testament to Ducati's innovation, but also as a rolling laboratory for the broader push toward next-generation electric mobility. The potential for this technology to transform the motorcycling industry in the United States is immense, and we eagerly await further developments.
