Electric Mercedes-Benz eIntouro undergoes summer trials in Spain
Mercedes-Benz eIntouro Completes Successful Summer Testing
The battery-electric intercity bus, the Mercedes-Benz eIntouro, produced by Daimler Buses, has successfully completed its summer testing in Andalusia, southern Spain. The testing, which took place under temperatures as high as 45 degrees Celsius, aimed to evaluate the vehicle's performance under extreme summer conditions.
The tests included a comprehensive evaluation of the electric powertrain, energy management, battery thermal management, charging processes, and air conditioning system. The eIntouro, with an official range of up to 500 kilometers per charge, demonstrated its efficiency and reliability during the testing period.
The vehicles covered approximately 300 to 500 kilometers daily, completing a 4,000-kilometer round trip from Mannheim to Granada, Spain, and back under their own power. The test program included long and steep ascents in the Sierra Nevada mountains up to 2,500 meters in height with full load, and long downhill drives using the electric retarder.
The eIntouro, based on the diesel high-floor bus Mercedes-Benz Intouro but with a battery-electric drive, also showcased its suitability for short trips and excursions on the way to and from the tests. The test team made further adjustments to the control and regulation of the air conditioning and drive components, as well as the charging components, to optimize the vehicle's performance.
The tests provided valuable insights for the further optimization towards series production of the battery-electric eIntouro. Daimler Buses aims to enable the switch to e-mobility for classic intercity lines, school bus trips, and smaller journeys with the eIntouro.
In addition to the 12.18-meter-long eIntouro, there will also be the eIntouro M with a length of 13.09 meters, covering seating variants from 50 to 63 seats. The high-voltage batteries of the eIntouro were charged at various public fast-charging stations along highways in Spain, France, and Germany.
The world premiere of the eIntouro will take place at the Busworld Europe in October in Brussels. The test results will contribute to the production of the Mercedes-Benz eIntouro for series production. The vehicle is already available for order.
Last winter, two eIntouro prototypes successfully completed extensive winter tests in Finnish Rovaniemi at temperatures down to minus 30 degrees. For the first time in a European bus, software updates can be installed in the eIntouro without a workshop visit, further enhancing its convenience and efficiency.
The search results do not contain information about who officially inaugurated the order of the battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eIntouro. However, the successful completion of the summer testing marks a significant step towards the widespread adoption of electric buses in intercity travel.
