Electric scooters and bikes to be available in Dresden starting 1st August
New E-Scooter and E-Bike Sharing Services Launch in Dresden
Starting August 1, 2025, Dresden will welcome three new e-scooter providers—Bolt, Voi, and RideMovi—and two e-bike providers—Lime and Voi—as part of a structured, regulated approach to shared mobility. Each provider is allowed to operate up to 833 e-scooters and up to 1,000 e-bikes.
The city's call for expressions of interest in May 2025 led to the selection of these providers, with Lime and Voi being chosen for e-bikes, and three out of six applicants—Bolt, Voi, and RideMovi—for e-scooters. The new offerings will supplement the existing Mobibike system.
Dresden's "Sharing-Leitlinien Mobilität" guidelines, aimed at harmonizing operations and promoting city-friendly practices, will be applied for the first time. Key rules include fleet distribution quotas, mandatory photo documentation, geolocation checks, and the use of sensors to detect improperly parked vehicles.
The roll-out of the new vehicles will be phased over weeks, so initially there may be more instances of improperly parked e-scooters and e-bikes during the transition. However, the city plans to establish provider-neutral sharing stations for orderly parking of vehicles and implement digital blocking zones to prevent returns outside these stations.
It's worth noting that Lime is ending its scooter service in the city as its contract with the city expires at the end of the month. Previously, Tier-branded scooters were present, but they have since left the city.
The new vehicles will primarily serve as feeder services to train stations or for direct connections, making electric assistance particularly beneficial in Dresden, a city with significant elevation changes. The effectiveness of these measures will be regularly evaluated, with an initial assessment planned for one year after implementation.
The Federal Ministry of Transport's ordinance on small electric vehicles regulates the use of scooters, and future operations will require permits and fees. The city is committed to promoting a sustainable and efficient mobility system, and the new e-scooter and e-bike offerings are a step towards achieving this goal.
