Elon Musk, the visionary CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, shared his insights on the future of energy at the PG&E Innovation Summit. Speaking from Italy, he praised PG&E's efforts in renewable energy and expressed his concerns about digital superintelligence. He also discussed the need for a rapid transition to sustainable energy.

Musk believes that the world's power supply will primarily rely on solar and wind energy, backed up by battery storage in the long term. He suggests running power plants continuously and using stationary battery packs like the Tesla Mega Pack for energy buffering. He estimates that global electrical output will need to triple to facilitate this transition.

He is worried about the potential dangers of digital superintelligence and advocates for regulatory oversight to manage these risks. Despite his focus on sustainability, Musk does not favor demonizing the oil and gas industry, acknowledging that oil is still necessary for certain functions.

Looking at Germany's power supply future, Musk agrees that challenges lie ahead. He supports the need for additional flexible capacities, up to 22-35 GW, to ensure supply security until 2035. This includes accelerating renewable energy and grid expansions, as well as improving demand flexibility.
