EU Unveils 'Apply AI Strategy' to Boost Sovereignty and Defence Capabilities

The European Union (EU) is set to unveil its 'Apply AI Strategy' on Tuesday. This new approach aims to bolster the EU's AI sovereignty and strengthen its defence technology capabilities. The strategy seeks to reduce reliance on foreign AI providers and position AI as a strategic asset integrated into the EU's systems.

The EU plans to invest €1 billion from existing financing programmes to support AI adoption across various sectors. These include healthcare, defence, and manufacturing. The strategy aims to improve AI usage in these areas and accelerate the development of European-made AI tools.

The EU is concerned about external dependencies in the AI stack, which can pose supply chain risks. To mitigate this, the EU wants to increase demand for European-made open source AI solutions from public administrations. It also plans to mobilise resources to develop and deploy European AI-enabled command and control capacities for defence.

The EU's 'Apply AI Strategy' is part of its broader effort to strengthen its technological independence and security. By investing in and accelerating the development of homemade AI technologies, the EU seeks to enhance its industrial competitiveness, resilience, and overall security.
