EU's 2026 Driving Changes: Next Gen eCall, License Renewals & Rising CO2 Prices

From 2026, significant changes are set to impact both drivers and the automotive industry in the EU. Key among these is the introduction of the 'Next Generation eCall', which promises faster and more reliable emergency data transmission. Meanwhile, CO2 pricing is set to rise, potentially leading to increased fuel costs. Drivers will also need to update their licenses and vehicle technologies will see innovations.

The 'Next Generation eCall' will use the modern 4G LTE network, replacing outdated 2G and 3G technology. This upgrade will enable quicker and more reliable data transmission in emergencies. Starting from 2026, all newly developed vehicle types of classes M1 and N1 must be equipped with this system to obtain type approval.

Drivers will also face changes. By January 19, 2026, those with driver's licenses issued between 1999 and 2001 must exchange them to avoid a ten-euro fine and potential issues abroad. The new EU driver's license costs 25 euros and is valid for 15 years, but only the document, not the driving privilege, is renewed.

Looking ahead, CO2 pricing will increase significantly. In 2026, the price will rise to a corridor between 55 and 65 euros per tonne of CO2. This will make gasoline 18.6 cents and diesel 20.5 cents more expensive per litre compared to 2021 prices. From 2027, the CO2 price will be determined by the auctioning of emission certificates on the market, which could lead to sharply rising fuel prices.

These changes, including the 'Next Generation eCall', updated driver's licenses, and rising CO2 prices, will shape the future of driving in the EU. While some may pose challenges, they also signal advancements in safety and sustainability.
