Evolution of BBC accessibility for Swiss residents

The BBC has announced significant changes to its audio services that will affect users outside the UK. From July 21, 2025, the BBC Sounds app will become a UK-exclusive service, no longer accessible for those outside the UK [1][5].

For international listeners, the BBC has launched an alternative way to access its radio programs and podcasts via a new audio service hosted on BBC.com and the BBC app internationally. This platform provides live streaming of key radio stations such as BBC Radio 4 and the World Service in English, along with selected podcasts like the Global News Podcast, World of Secrets, and The Infinite Monkey Cage [1].

Additional options for international users include accessing live radio streams and on-demand selected podcasts directly through BBC.com's new audio section, which covers national and local UK stations [1]. Users can also continue to listen to BBC audio content on third-party platforms, which remain unaffected by the change [1].

It's important to note that the BBC iPlayer website cannot be accessed with a non-UK IP address, and BBC TV content access requirements remain unchanged, requiring a subscription to a satellite package for those living outside the UK [2].

The new BBC.com website does not provide specific details about the content available, but the new site and app contain around 1,000 current and archived podcasts [3]. Many BBC podcasts are also available on other platforms like Spotify or Apple.

Subscribers outside the UK will not be able to save any subscribed or bookmarked content from BBC Sounds [4]. However, revenue generated by BBC Studios' commercial services is returned to the BBC to support its public purpose in the UK [6].

Registration is required (for free) to use the new BBC app or the BBC.com website [7]. BBC Studios is a commercial subsidiary of the BBC, focused on bringing BBC content to international audiences.

Using a VPN does not allow access to BBC content outside the UK due to rights agreements [8]. Despite the closure of BBC Sounds abroad, international audiences can still listen to many BBC radio programs and podcasts through BBC.com, the BBC app internationally, and third-party platforms, ensuring continued access to the BBC's extensive audio content.

In the wake of the BBC's decision to make the BBC Sounds app UK-exclusive, international users can still access a variety of BBC radio programs and podcasts through technology-based platforms like the BBC.com website and the BBC app internationally, providing an alternative means to engage with business content, including BBC Radio 4 and the World Service in English. Additionally, tech-savvy listeners can continue to leverage third-party platforms like Spotify or Apple to discover and enjoy a selection of BBC podcasts, curated under the umbrella of BBC's focus on global technology and digital distribution.
