Introducing the Scout Motors Inc. Scout® Traveler™ SUV and Scout® Terra™ Truck
Scout Motors Inc. has made a splash in the automotive industry with the launch of two new vehicles: the Scout® Traveler™ SUV and Scout® Terra™ truck. Scheduled for production beginning in 2027 as 2028 model-year vehicles, these vehicles are set to revolutionize the market with their advanced features and impressive specifications.
Key Features and Specifications
Both the Scout Terra and Scout Traveler are body-on-frame vehicles, boasting a bold, iconic design that harks back to the legacy of the Scout Motors brand. The Scout Terra is a pickup truck, while the Scout Traveler takes the form of an SUV. Both vehicles will be available in fully electric (battery EV) powertrains, with the Scout Terra expected to start at around $59,000 and the Scout Traveler at around $57,500.
The Scout Terra and Scout Traveler are equipped with large, rugged 35-inch tires, offering more than 12 inches of ground clearance, and boasting significant water fording capabilities. They are designed for functionality, offering flexible cargo areas and robust materials. The Scout Terra is expected to handle more than 10,000 pounds and also has a nearly 2,000-pound payload capacity, while the Scout Traveler can tow over 7,000 pounds and has a nearly 2,000-pound payload capacity.
Innovative Technologies and Architecture
The Scout vehicles make use of a new zonal electrical architecture developed through a joint venture between Volkswagen Group and Rivian. This architecture enhances modularity, reliability, and software updates, enabling over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics. Scout Motors will sell directly to customers, bypassing traditional dealership franchise models, and will service the vehicles itself, similar to Tesla and Rivian strategies.
A "Harvester" range-extended concept was announced, featuring a small gasoline generator to produce electricity onboard, possibly as an optional or future range extender. However, this applies mainly as a concept rather than an immediate production feature. The Scout vehicles also feature a proprietary user interface system called Scout Community UX, built on the VW-Rivian joint architecture.
Production and Pricing
No exact total production numbers have been publicly released so far. However, reservations for both vehicles are currently open in the United States and Canada. The Scout Terra and Scout Traveler can be reserved for purchase starting at $50,000 for the Traveler and $51,500 for the Terra.
The Scout Terra and Scout Traveler are expected to offer impressive performance, with both vehicles achieving 0-60 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds. Extended range variants of the Scout Traveler and Terra could exceed 500 miles, thanks to a built-in gas generator.
In summary, both the Scout Terra and Scout Traveler will be body-on-frame, fully electric vehicles with competitive range and rugged off-road capabilities. They will launch as 2028 models in late 2027 with direct sales and service by Scout Motors. Production begins in South Carolina, and prices start in the high $50,000 range.
