Experiencing the Cybertruck Tow a Trailer: Mostly Smooth Apart from a Single Noticeable Hiccup

The Tesla Cybertruck, with its sleek design and impressive towing capacity, has been making waves in the automotive industry. Early owners towing trailers have shared their experiences, revealing both positive aspects and some challenges, particularly regarding weight distribution and lateral sway control.

One owner, Joseph Lee, towed a dump trailer a few hundred miles and noted that while the towing itself was easier compared to his Ford F-350 diesel, the range was significantly affected. He achieved about 100 miles at 75 mph before needing recharge stops. Another owner, Joel Nashett, carried heavy payloads and was impressed by the Cybertruck’s auto leveling and handling. Despite the truck squatting initially under load, it automatically leveled, and the regenerative braking reduced the need for extensive brake use, contributing to stability.

Early feedback from towing large trailers highlights the need for proper load distribution to minimize lateral sway. The Cybertruck’s adaptive suspension, which actively compensates for load weight to maintain stability and reduce squat or sagging, helps in improving lateral control during towing. Some owners have also emphasized using adaptive regenerative braking to maintain controlled deceleration, which indirectly improves towing control by reducing abrupt brake application that might aggravate sway.

In terms of addressing lateral sway and improving control, Cybertruck owners are learning to use the vehicle’s advanced suspension and regenerative braking systems in combination. Proper trailer loading, ensuring weight is distributed evenly, and planning routes that include Superchargers that accommodate trailers are equally important for safe and efficient towing.

The Tesla Cybertruck’s electric power delivery felt strong during towing, making it feel like the trailer wasn’t even back there. However, electric vehicles, including the Cybertruck, experience steep consumption when towing, especially on elevation climbs and highways. Open trailers and constant wind resistance can affect range the most.

As the Cybertruck continues to be taken into the real world, it is clear that the transition to electric power in trucks doesn’t eliminate the need for traditional towing knowledge. Even with the right hardware, a smooth tow still depends on thoughtful preparation and smart technique.

We invite our readers to share their experiences with range and stability while towing with the Cybertruck in the comments section. The Cybertruck’s towing capacity, rated to tow up to 11,000 lbs depending on configuration, is a testament to its capabilities. As more owners take it into the real world, the Cybertruck continues to evolve, offering a fresh perspective to the evolving automotive landscape.
