Exploring Primeval Domains, Awake Unveils Watch Collection Akin to 'Jurassic Park'

French watch brand Awake has just released two limited-edition timepieces that pay homage to the iconic dinosaurs of Jurassic Park. The Sơn Mài Frosted Leaf Blue RAPTORS Edition and the T-Rex Edition are a unique fusion of French creativity, Swiss precision, and ancestral handmade techniques, combining traditional Vietnamese Sơn Mài lacquer art and contemporary watchmaking.

The T-Rex and Raptors editions stand out with their bold, fossil-like dial textures that evoke the prehistoric ambiance of the Jurassic era. The T-Rex edition features a fiery orange dial, while the Raptors edition boasts a deep jungle green dial. Both watches are limited to 50 numbered pieces each and can be ordered on Awake's website.

The T-Rex edition features applique representing 2 claw marks set above the 6 o'clock marker, while the Raptors edition features three claw marks on its green dial, referencing the velociraptors' dexterity in the 1993 Steven Spielberg megahit. The watch straps are crafted in collaboration with DELUGS, using a 20x16mm light gray Nubuck leather strap lined in black rubber for the T-Rex edition and deep green marine leather for the Raptors edition.

The timepieces use Swiss-made La Joux-Perret automatic calibers and have 39mm stainless steel cases. The power reserve of the Swiss-made La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement housed in the recycled stainless steel cases is 68 hours. The dials are handcrafted and take between 10 and 15 hours to perfect.

The casebacks of the T-Rex and Raptors editions are laser-engraved with a jungle motif and famous quotes from the Jurassic Park film. The quote "Spared No Expense" is displayed on the T-Rex edition's caseback, while "Life Finds a Way" is displayed on the Raptors edition's. The quotes are rendered in the iconic font developed by Doug Olena in the '90s.

Multiple coats of transparent lacquer are applied and meticulously sanded until achieving a glasslike surface. The dials feature pure silver leaf gilding and naturally colored pigments. The straps for the T-Rex edition are crafted from Squama scaled salmon leather, while the Raptors edition's straps are made from deep green marine leather. Both straps have an iridescent, reptilian texture that reflects light differently from various viewing angles.

These Jurassic Park-inspired Awake watches are a special edition that merges cinematic nostalgia with high-end horology and artisanal craftsmanship, setting them apart from other Sơn Mài models that are more focused on traditional cultural artistry and symbolism. They are part of a limited RAPTORS Edition that carefully references the dinosaur theme both aesthetically and conceptually, creating a collectible appeal tied to pop culture.

In essence, these watches offer a unique blend of art, nature, and pop culture, making them an exciting addition to any watch collection. They are priced at €2,075 (~$2,348) and are expected to deliver on May 15.
