Nio's Onvo L90 SUV Achieves Strong Sales in China

Nio Inc's sub-brand Onvo has launched its L90 SUV, and it's making waves in the Chinese market. The vehicle, which began deliveries on August 1, has quickly become one of the top three best-selling large SUVs in China, according to a report by local media outlet Yiche.

The success of the Onvo L90 is due in part to Nio's high-capacity production strategy at its Hefei plant. The production line is operating at full capacity and working overtime to meet the strong market demand for the L90. The company aims to ramp up to 25,000 monthly deliveries in Q4 2025, reflecting a focus on rapid scaling and stock preparation to accelerate delivery cycles.

Despite the high demand, delivery wait times have stretched to 8–10 weeks as of early August 2025, up from an initial 4–6 weeks at launch. Onvo has introduced a flexible battery purchase plan with a 60 kWh rental option at RMB 599/month, targeting urban users by lowering the purchase threshold.

Shen Fei, Onvo's president, has been hailed as one of the key executives behind the success of the L90. Shen replaced Alan Ai as president of Onvo in April, following the disappointing performance of the brand's first model, the L60 midsize SUV. Shen shared a video on Weibo showing Nio's factory operating around the clock to ship L90 vehicles.

The Onvo L90 has a starting price of RMB 265,800 ($36,860) including the battery pack. Nio has achieved better body lightweighting and higher integration in the manufacturing of the L90, resulting in improved energy efficiency and the largest frunk ever seen on an EV.

Meanwhile, Nio's stock ticker is NYSE: NIO. In contrast, Li Auto faced poor initial reception for its six-seat electric SUV, the Li i8, which was launched on July 29. Wang, the former president of Great Wall Motor and appointed president of our X (Twitter) profilepeng (NYSE: our X (Twitter) profilePEV) in January 2023, has overseen the production of the L90.

As Nio continues to accelerate production and delivery of the L90, the company is aiming to support its break-even goals in Q4 2025. With the Onvo L90's strong sales performance and focus on rapid scaling, it seems that Nio is well on its way to achieving this goal.
