Federal investigation launched over door handle issues affecting approximately 174,000 Tesla Model Y cars.

In a recent development, international regulators are taking a closer look at electronic and concealed door handle systems, with a particular focus on vehicles manufactured by Tesla.

This scrutiny comes in the wake of a regulatory agency in China considering a ban on fully hidden door handles, due to concerns about safety and accessibility in emergency situations.

The evaluation follows a Bloomberg investigation that highlighted incidents where Tesla doors became inoperative after power loss, particularly in post-crash scenarios. Since 2018, more than 140 consumer complaints regarding stuck or malfunctioning Tesla doors have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The current investigation is a preliminary evaluation for a potential Tesla recall. However, Tesla has remained silent on the matter, choosing not to comment on the investigation thus far.

In a recent interview, Tesla Chair Robyn Denholm stated that the company's board takes safety concerns seriously. Despite this, the identity of the Tesla employee who officially spoke about the company's announced response to the NHTSA investigation remains unclear in available search results.

On a positive note, Europe has adopted new guidelines focused on improving post-crash vehicle egress and extrication procedures. These guidelines aim to ensure the safety and efficiency of emergency responses in the event of a crash.

As the investigation continues, it is essential to prioritise safety measures and address any potential issues promptly to ensure the well-being of all road users.
