Ford Revolutionizes Electric Truck Production with $2 Billion Investment in Louisville Plant

Ford Motor Company is making a radical shift in strategy and design for its electric pickups, investing $2 billion in the Louisville Assembly Plant as part of a larger $5 billion investment combined with BlueOval Battery Park Michigan. This move is set to revolutionize the company's electric pickup offerings and strengthen its domestic production capacity.

The investment will see the development of a new Universal EV Platform and a Universal EV Production System that simplify vehicle assembly for safety, quality, and speed while enabling cost-efficient production at scale.

Key aspects of this shift include the production of affordable, high-quality electric vehicles. The platform will support a family of electric vehicles starting with a midsize four-door electric pickup truck priced around $30,000, launching in 2027. This truck will be roughly the size of a Ford Maverick but offer more interior passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, along with practical features like a frunk and a truck bed.

The Louisville plant is undergoing a 52,000 square foot expansion and digital infrastructure upgrades, including the fastest network among all Ford plants, to enable faster material movement and quality control. This production line is expected to build these EVs up to 40% faster than current vehicles.

Ford’s new EV production system combines industrial know-how with a start-up mentality, marking a significant departure from traditional assembly lines. Three years ago, a small group of people in California were empowered to work on this project, giving them the freedom to come up with a new concept for a vehicle.

The investment also covers the development and production of prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries at BlueOval Battery Park, supporting the supply chain and creating thousands of new jobs domestically. The move to Louisville entails phasing out gasoline SUVs such as the popular Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair after the 2026 model year to make room for this new electric vehicle production line.

Jim Farley, the CEO of Ford, made bold statements about these plans during a presentation. Engineers and executives frequently emphasized the radical differences in Ford's plans for its next-generation electric pickups during the nearly hour-long presentation.
