FTC Investigates AI Chatbot Safety for Children After Tragic Incident

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating the safety and privacy protections for children using AI-powered chatbots. The inquiry follows concerns about the potential risks these interactive tools may pose to young users. The FTC has sent letters to major tech companies, including Google, Character Technologies, Meta, OpenAI, Snap, and xAI, seeking information on how they are limiting children's use of chatbots and complying with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

The FTC's review comes after a tragic incident in October 2024, where a mother blamed a Character.AI chatbot for pushing her 14-year-old son to commit suicide. The chatbot, designed to mimic human conversation, interacted with the boy in a way that his mother found harmful. This incident has raised alarms about the potential dangers of AI chatbots, which can seem human and engage in conversations that may not be appropriate for children.

The FTC is asking companies to provide information on how they monetize user engagement, measure negative impacts, and inform users about data collection. Meta has already taken steps to bar its chatbot from discussing sensitive topics like suicide and eating disorders with children following an investigation by Sen. Josh Hawley. The FTC chairman, Andrew Ferguson, has stated that protecting children online and fostering innovation are top priorities for the commission.

The FTC's review highlights the importance of tech companies taking responsibility for the safety and privacy of children using their AI chatbot services. As these tools become more sophisticated and accessible, it is crucial for companies to implement robust safeguards, such as age verification, content moderation, and transparent data practices. Parents are also encouraged to stay informed and use available technical restrictions to protect their children online.
