German MP Proposes Bitcoin Integration, Including Tax Payments

Independent Member of Parliament Joanna Cotar has tabled a resolution in the German Bundestag, proposing significant steps towards Bitcoin integration. The draft resolution seeks to make Bitcoin a legal tender and allow citizens to pay taxes in the cryptocurrency.

Cotar, who left the AfD party in 2022 over policy disagreements, is the first MP to actively promote Bitcoin in the Bundestag. Her initiative aims to position Germany as a leading Bitcoin location and capitalize on the Bitcoin movement.

The draft resolution is comprehensive, proposing to use Bitcoin mining to harness renewable energy and considering operating a full node a fundamental right. It also suggests maintaining the 1-year speculation period for Bitcoin and exploring tax payments in the cryptocurrency. Additionally, the proposal encourages the use of mining farms to stabilize the power grid.

Cotar's initiative is a significant step towards Bitcoin integration in Germany. It seeks to educate politicians about Bitcoin's potential and warn against the potential restrictions of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The draft resolution demands that the Federal Government opposes the introduction of a digital euro and examines the recognition of Bitcoin as a legal tender.
